Arbella: England's Lost Queen Book Review

In Arbella: England’s Lost Queen, Sarah Gristwood quite ably caught the essence of Arbella Stuart’s sad, train wreck of a life which reflected her "too royal of a lineage" and the English monarchy’s paranoia of a rival claiming the throne.
This worry was reflected years earlier by the beheading of the Duke of Buckingham, Anne and Mary Boleyn’s uncle, for offending Henry VIII (Elizabeth’s father) with "too royal blood in his veins."
Throughout her life, she was considered a threat; first by her cousin Elizabeth I and then by Mary Queen of Scot’s son, James I. Living her life under pseudo house arrest, she was prevented from marrying until well into her 30's for fear of producing a male heir who could claim the throne of England. Since Elizabeth was childless, the line of succession issue reached a fever pitch.
In an almost parallel universe, Arbella was kept isolated as was Mary Queen of Scots (the mother of James and cousin to Elizabeth). With Mary Queen of Scots a prisoner under the roof of her grandmother, Bess of Hardwick and her 4th husband, Arbella spent many hours with the displaced Scottish Queen tending their tapestry. After Mary’s death, Arbella continued her lonely existence occasionally being invited to court only to be sent away again.
Finally, when she was in her 30's, Arbella took it upon herself to marry a Seymour who was also of royal bloodlines not to mention 10 years her junior. By marrying without the monarchs’ consent, both were considered traitors and she was sent to the country while Seymour was imprisoned in the Tower of London. A botched escape ended with her capture and his reaching freedom on the mainland.
It was never clear if she went truly mad as her rambling writings would point to but surely the years of confinement, boredom and an unfulfilled life had to have taken its toll. In the end, she died from starvation in the Tower of London, all the while hanging onto the simple hope that she and her husband would reunite and finally be allowed to live a normal life.
How sad that such potential would be wasted and even more tragic that most people do not know of her existence. Hopefully, this excellent book will change that.

Check Out SI College Football Tour Guy

You have to check out the Sports Illustrated College Football Tour Guy, Dan Rubenstein. Each week, during college football season, he travels to a different city to find the best tailgate parties and game festivities. How cool a job is that?
This clip is from last year's FL vs GA game in Jacksonville but it is still funny. Enjoy!

Let's Play Some SEC Football Auburn vs LSU

Week 4 of the college football season finds College Gameday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama for the matchup of #6 LSU (2-0)
vs. #10 Auburn (3-0).
Kickoff is at 7:45 est on ESPN. With five SEC schools in the top 10, this is one of the weekend's premier venues.

If you are staying in Auburn for the game, here are uber boudica's picks for the best football weekend rooms.

The Wedgewood Blue Crenshaw House B&B nestles among giant oak and pecan trees on an acre site formerly inhabited by Creek Indians. Built by Auburn University Professor Bolling Hall Crenshaw, this graceful Victorian structure features bay windows and delicate gingerbread trim. Rich architectural details, tasteful period décor, and comfortable antiques create a peaceful atmosphere for guests.

This 115 year old home is on the National Register of Historic Homes but has all the comforts of the 21st century. And of course, breakfast is served in the "Tiger Room." I was impressed by the prominent nature of their guest list...numerous Nobel prize winners, college presidents, corporate CEO's, astronauts, television and sports personalities, etc. BTW, the new owners are among many generations of Auburn alums.

Another choice in Auburn is The Hotel at Auburn University. It is centrally located near the shops and restaurants of downtown Auburn and within walking distance of the fun and entertainment at the university.

Insider tip...get ready to throw some toilet paper in the tree at Toomers Corner after an Auburn athletic victory. It’s ok because it’s a tradition. This phenomenon has been written about in numerous publications including the newly released book Eccentric USA. “Auburn is the only city in the country that has a line item in their budget to clean up toilet paper.” OK, whatever floats your boat!

Where To Stay For College Gameday In LA

It's time to follow College Gameday to the west coast for the match up of the #1 ranked Trojans vs the #5 ranked Buckeyes. For those going to the the game on Saturday at 8:00 EST/5:00 PST) in Los Angeles, here are some great places to stay.

Should your choice be to get off the beaten track and stay where many stars go to "get away", grab your sufboard and head for the Malibu Beach Inn, on Carbon Beach. Out of town and away from the bustle of LA, it is on the Pacific Coast Highway and just received a massive multi million dollar makeover and has become a luxury property, thanks to new owner Oracle CEO, billionaire Larry Ellison.

I have stayed there previous to the renovation and always enjoyed the fabulous location albeit the boho shabby chic atmosphere. Sitting on the terrace at sunset, snuggled next to the fire pit (yes, it is chilly even during the summer) with a glass of wine is a relaxing way to end your day.

Insider tip: the Malibu grocery store is the kind of place where the fish counter guy is as likely to be selling his script to a customer in the movie/television industry as he is to be selling ahi tuna. An interesting experience and quite normal for this part of California.
If you want to be close to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, then your best bet is the luxurious and historic Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa. Ask for either the Spanish-style Clara Vista cottage or the Tournament of Roses suite atop the hotel for panoramic views. The Hotel Bel Air is a luxury choice tucked away between Rodeo Drive and Getty Center. It is now a member of the U.K.'s prestigious Dorchester Collection. The Peninsula Beverly Hills, offers the perfect, luxurious oasis, set in one of the most prestigious areas of Los Angeles, in the heart of Beverly Hills.
The
Beverly Hills Hotel, known as the Pink Palace, is also a member of the Dorchester Collection and an iconic choice while in the City of Angels. You never know what famous faces you will see.Everyone has heard of Chateau Marmont, and the sense of history and old school Hollywood glamor landmark make it a "must see".

Remember to check out slightlynorthofworth deals and steals for more luxaholic travel discounts, updated daily. Always tell them, slightlynorthofworth sent me!

Eye Candy For The Eclectic Soul

It started by looking at Hampton's cottages in House Beautiful. This is a classic example with weathered grey shingles and blue hydrangia shutters.

A birch bench is used to hold books in one of the bedrooms.
Then, I kept going and couldn't stop myself from looking up architectural and kitchen details. So join in my eclectic journey and enjoy!
